Eleftheria Giannouli

Curriculum Vitae

Eleftheria Giannouli received her Master’s degree in Sport- and Movement Gerontology from the German Sport University Cologne. After that, she started her PhD at the Institute of Physiology and Anatomy of the German Sport University Cologne under the supervision of Prof. Wiebren Zijlstra. In parallel, she worked as a research assistant at the European (7th Framework) Project “FARSEEING”, focusing on the detection and prevention of falls in old age. For her dissertation “Mobility in Old Age: Capacity and Performance” she looked into the predictive ability of laboratory-based mobility assessments as well as other multi-domain determinants for real-life mobility in community-dwelling older adults. From 2016 till 2019 she worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of Movement and Sport Gerontology of the German Sport University Cologne. Her main task was the development of risk models, functional assessment strategies and exercise-based interventions at the European (Horizon2020) project “My Active & Healthy Aging-myAHA). In 2020 she relocated to Switzerland and she is currently working as a Post-Doc Researcher at the “Sports- & Exercise Medicine” Group at the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health of the University of Basel and as Senior Researcher and Research Group Leader at the “Motor Control & Learning” Lab at the Department of Health Science and Technology of the ETH Zurich.

Research Interests

Eleftheria Giannouli is interested in ambulatory assessments of mobility (physical activity and life-space) and cognition, using smartphones to log inertial sensor and GPS as well as ecological momentary app-based assessments. In addition to this, she is interested in the effects of cognitive functioning on motor performance, especially under dual-tasking conditions. She has developed a novel concept for step training (StepIt) and she aims to look into its effects in falls-preventions applications. Within an Innosuisse project, she is currently developing a series of ICT-based motor and cognitive assessments using an exergaming platform.
